Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan on June 5th! Order your Tartan Swatch before April 15.

Tartan Swatch Request

Due April 15, 2022

Greetings fellow St. David’s celebrants. On June 5th, 2022, during our worship service at 9:30a.m  we will be participating in our very first Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan! If you are not familiar with this celebration, it is a Scottish tradition that brings the varying clans together and their representative tartans to be blessed by clergy. In our case, we are very pleased to have Reverend Vaughn McTernan officiating. For more information on the meaning of a Kirkin go to http://www.tartansauthority.com/tartan/tartan-today/the-kirkin-o-the-tartan/

If you would like to participate you do not have to sport a kilt. You can bring a representative tartan piece of clothing such as a scarf, beret, or tie. Rather than spending money on a garment or accessory, you can purchase a SWATCH of a tartan. You do not have to be Scottish, Welsh, or Irish. There are many options based on your military service, vocation, or just a like for a certain design. If you suspect there is a link to a Scottish clan you can look up a clan name,  its many septs (associated surnames) and tartan at https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/index  The other option is to have a St. David’s swatch blessed, representative of our patron saint. This is The St Davids Welsh National tartan. Also known as The Brithwe Dewi Sant.

We will be taking orders for swatches up until April 15 to have delivery from the UK well before our June 5th Kirkin. Each swatch is $5 including shipping cost. Of course, you are welcome to order tartan motif items such as teddy bears, rosettes, or sashes but we will only be ordering swatches. The link to see the hundreds of tartans is https://www.welsh-tartan.com/tartan-finder Select your swatch or swatches and send your information and payment to Carolynne before April 15th! Make checks payable to St. David of The Hills.

If you don’t find what you are looking for, USA Kilts is another option https://www.usakilts.com/ they are based out of Pennsylvania and slightly more expensive but have free shipping. Since ALL tartan mills operate out of the UK there is more handling of the product than Welsh Tartan and this may explain the higher cost. We will NOT be ordering from USA Kilts to simplify things on our end.
